I would like to go to the Bristol meet but I feel like I'm  trying to fit a square peg into a round hole as I think I can only make it for the Saturday. From  London by train it see,s to be close  to 4 hours each way so the logistics aren't good. I'll have a rethink to look at possibly  adding Friday or Sunday.

Hi Rosaleen, im sure you will find it worth your while, these buk meets are really good and firm friends are made, if you were to consider adding an overnight stay, i really couldnt advise which would be the best for you, as all three days will be amazing.  Xxxx

Hi Rosaleen
Are you looking at coming from London Paddington?  Train journey should be around 1 hr 45 each way to Bristol temple meads from Paddington. I usually travel to london from another Bristol station and the journeys usually pretty good

Think the train companies must be releasing some cheaper tickets now, can see some returns Saturday afternoon (4 and 4:45) at £15 which is quite surprisingly cheap for London trips - I must remember to keep checking when I'm travelling! Xx

Yes Emz is right so sort something out soon if you can do it Rosaleen which would be fantastic to meet you, because you could save possibly around 65% or more on an advanced return train ticket the earlier you get it.

Norma is right you will make lifelong friends and you'll be planning coming to the next one before this one is finished.  :coffeetoast:

Understandably meets can be nerve racking, especially when not knowing anyone/not met before, I travelled 3 hours each way to Liverpool to meet peeps for the first time for a short afternoon meet.  I have to say I'm very glad I did, after the first initial hellos we were all chatting away, finding common ground and everyone was friendly and approachable. We had a stroll, went for lunch and chatted.  I came away having made friends

Not putting pressure on anyone, just want to reassure.  I have it on good authority that the previous Birmingham meet was exactly the same, with several laughs shared (I unfortunately had to drop out of that one following an accident in the family)

Anyone who is nervous arriving we can ensure we meet you and help you feel part of the group.  I'd say Saturday is probably better if you're thinking of one day without an overnight stay xx

I can promise you Rosaleen  within 5 minutes of meeting its as though been friends for ever, and refering back to Birmingham last year the only tears shed were when we were saying our goodbyes.  Xxxx

I can only endorse what they said I went to York just for the day and the Birmingham meet for the Friday night and Saturday morning but enjoyed even the reduced time.Another thing to check for train fares is the price of two single tickets they commit you to certain trains but are cheaper.I don't know what the room situation is at the Washington but there are two others very close by if its full.

Also consider splitting your train ticket - you can use the same train, no changing but tickets for different stretches of the journey are cheaper added up.  Google 'split train tickets' and it should give you some splits to try.  Ive saved alot by doing that, and you can double check it by looking at the stops - if you search each part you will see the timings will match up xx

Thanks SO much for all your replies! I ll look into all the travel options that have been put forward. I admit I'd only had a v quick look on the web  and hadn't  known  which Bristol  station to aim for. I'll let you know how I get on. Thanks again

Yes but your way may have been an extra saving at maybe at £18.49 instead Emz

Sorry got to walk off now (Squeak squeak squeak squeak).

Haha!  I doubt you could have squeezed the extra penny, you're obviously already a pro Dave! :-)

Yep, good point for everyone, if travelling by train aim for Bristol Temple Meads.  That is the train station in the centre. Xx

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I've found the singles offers which says you must travel on the train you book,  but am wondering if the super off peak returns might be better IF they offer ANY train, in case I miss the one I  booked. The info bit on GWR isn't clear to me. Don't worry if you're not sure, I can check at my local station. Just realised I've not yet  checked the split train tickets, but maybe that's the same restriction, I'll find out.
I feel ok  about meeting new people, cos in  a sense you're not are you? I think a day will be enough for me just for now.  I  hope that I WILL be kicking myself for not having planned to come for longer. But it will be only 6 months since Goerge passed away and my first full day  out.

Hello everyone,
Just to say I've booked a train to Bristol for the Saturday arriving 9.40. I can  get to the Washington Hotel if that's where you'll be ?   on foot or bus, so should arrive there no later than 10.20. The  hotel website says its two miles from the station ,  - I like walking - I'll check with them about bus routes in case it's raining.
 I've booked a return for Saturday 6.00pm
Looking forward to meeting people in person!
Rosaleen

And just so you know I have a map for each person, so will be easy for everyone to know where we are heading and see what is in central Bristol, and it usefully includes things like bus stops, toilets etc. It will be a nice relaxed pace with things to see and easy access to shops/cafes along the way.  For the places we are going, there's a bus route if anyone is worried about distances at all

Fingers crossed for the weather!  Its a beautiful city, even more so in the sun!

If anyone is worried pm me or Norma. xx

Well yes I am worried then Emz,,as their's no mention of any pubs on the way in your maps, so hence a big risk Norma could sober up if wer'e not careful and you know what she's like then.  :coffeetoast:

Sooooooo.... Norma and I have been talking and we thought it might be nice to start discussions about a weekend meet next year

Understanding we are all spread out over the country, we have been trying to think of somewhere reasonably central for as many areas as possible with good train links.  So, the proposal so far is:

Oxford
Weekend 19th-21st May

For anyone who is nervous I can assure you it's a lovely bunch of people - within minutes of meeting in Bristol this year we were all chatting and then sharing laughter over dinner. (And I have been reliably told Birmingham last year was also the same).   We met as strangers and parted as friends

So, who is up for it?  Reply and let us know so we can start the process of working out numbers, finding hotel & things to see. :-)  (I can promise fewer hills! ;-))

If this is much too far for people, I'm sure there will be smaller meets around the country throughout the year.  So continue to watch this space

 :hearts: xx

Hello all - for those not on the Facebook group,

So, we're now in 2017 and thoughts are turning to this years weekend meet. Oxford is proving rather expensive so given Birmingham has many access points by train, is reasonably central and has lots to do the location is changing to Birmingham this year.

Dates remain the same - Fri 19th - Sat 21st May

If you'd like to come please PM me or Norma so we can add you to the list.  Norma has reserved some rooms with a central Birmingham hotel xx
