Title: Anybody any advice on bereavement counselling
Post by: Louise74 on December 06, 2017, 08:54:52 AM
Hi all

After a period of feeling really down and struggling abit I asked my G.P to refer me for some bereavement counselling. I had my first session yesterday morning and have to admit I felt terrible all day, has anyone else experienced this and is it common?
I have to be honest I have felt somewhat better in myself the last few weeks and although still abit up and down I did feel some improvement in my mood and anxiety. However yesterday morning I cried on the way to my appointment just thinking about talking to her, then when I went in the room I cried that much I could hardly speak for about 10 minutes. The lady was lovely I have no complaints about her and I know it is probably a good thing in the long run but I did notice it sort of drew me back into feeling terrible and missing my mum unless this was coincidence and I was going to have a bad day anyway?
My upset seemed to last all day right into last evening, I feel bad as my husband has been so supportive but I never stopped moaning all evening about anything and everything and was so irritable I even found my 3 year old hard work aswell. I then stuffed my face with food when I have been dieting and doing so well so that made me feel even more fed up! Incidently I have put 1 and 1/2 stone on in weight some I lost my mum.

Am feeling a little better this morning though, just wondering if anyone else has had similar upset from first counselling session?

Kind regards

Louise

I'm afraid I don't have any insight to share with you, as I have not had bereavement counselling. Hopefully another member can share their experience  :hearts: xx

Hi Louise I'm very sorry for your loss. I've had 4 sessions of bereavement counselling and my experience is that it hasn't helped me at all so far . I haven't felt any worse, just no different.  I hope if you continue it helps you.  P.s I totally understand about putting on some weight since losing your mum. I eat constantly now  x

My advice would be stick with it.This also happened too me.The first sessions were just me crying and I didn't want to go back because I felt worse but it did change and it did help in the end so I was glad I stuck it out.If you think about it,with a physical illness and physical medicine we often have side effects,so the comfort eating and feeling angry are also potentially side effects in just the same way,  temporary ones but part of the medicine. For me less drastic than the awful side effects of my previous attempts to take antidepressants.

Hi

Thank you for the replies Emz2014, Scared1 and Karena sorry about the delay in my response.

I have been for another counselling session since and although felt some upset it didn't feel quite as bad as the first appointment. I have my next appointment tomorrow so will see how I go.

I hope Christmas and New year have been okay for you all well as best it can be, this is my first Christmas without my mum, I must admit I found Christmas day easier than New year for some reason. strange really as my mum had Christmas dinner with us every year and although it was strange and sad without her I still managed to have some fun with my boys and our friends also my mums husband joined us. New year which I don't usually spend with my mum I found more upsetting as though I felt the coming year doesn't fill me with hope and excitement of good times like it used to? Anyway hopefully in time it wont always feel so bad.

Take care and best wishes to you all.

Louise

Counselling I've found is different for everyone.  Don't expect too much from it and the first few times you will probably feel completely drained.  Being able to put my feelings onto here certainly helped.  Take care.  Sending hugs. X
